WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Do others understand the philological, theological, political, and social importance of Susan Boyle - we love her. Others here would minimize her and deny her importance. Most say it is not her singing but her performance and story that accidentally changed frozen minds in the world.
Even those on this website would try to minimize her and live in a fluffy world and totally disregarding why Susan is “the biggest wakeup call of all time”. And then going back to business as usual, not wanting to discuss the reason why Susan Boyle is super important to the world. I’m sorry, it has to do with women’s rights and how women are stereo typed by religions and society!
You are being challenged by the old college debate, so are you going to stick your head in the sand and not meet the challenge?

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

@Junebug: I appreciate your contribution, but I do not agree that it has to be about women's rights, neither did Paul Potts had anything to do with men's rights or cellphone-sellers' rights. If Susan was a lesbian and not a virgin it would not have been an issue of gays' rights either. The story of Susan Boyle is about a person you see in your street. You think they have nothing special, just ordinary and then suddenly this person shows to the entire world that such a person in your street has indeed a huge gift that we should recognize and cherish. I also believe that in the west and other countries with similar circumstances like Australia, women's rights are far better protected than anywhere else in the world. Susan Boyle is about a gift and not about rights.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

You are wrong as it has already been decided that Paul Potts or Jamie Pugh were not treated with the indignation Susan Boyle was. They were given a chance before they began their act and SB was not, which the Pro's already say was a women's rights issue.
Let's not worry about you not being informed, she has philosphical importance as it relates to myth - read this if it is still in Wikipedia. Does the ugly duckling turn into the swan, or the frog into the prince, or does the ugly duckling, stay the same? Listen friend, she is the same, she changed the world. In other words, backwards mythology! This is why she is the biggest wakeup call of all time.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

OK, you have your point and I got mine. To me this is not about rights. To me and millions of other men on this planet Susan should have won the BGT show. When Paul Potts sang his audition you heard the same amount of utter suprise by the judges as the audience as well as with Susan Boyle. He was as unassuming in my eyes and I think many others as Susan Boyle. He was also bullied in life just like Susan Boyle. The trashbloids jump one male artists as well like Michael Jackson and very unfortunately. They did it with Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley as well. Male or female, as soon some rumours can be put under a microscope by the trashbloids they will do it. There is only one remedy: don't read them, don't buy them. As a representative of millions of men on this planet I want Susan to be succesful and not being bullied or trashed. It was even a female reporter who brought the first negative news about Susan Boyle in the trashbloids claiming she shouted at her and not a male.

Hi Reindeer!

Right on! Have been saying all along that this is a site where one has the privilege to come and to enjoy Susan's marvelous singing and to celebrate her successes.

I do not want to come to a 'Susan fan site' and get into a big hassle about 'women's rights'. There are many other sites geared to this issue where one can make their views known.

In fact, this site is to my mind a tribute in itself to Susan (and women) in that it was set up and is maintained by men who admire her and wish the very best for her.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

I stand corrected, Reinder - thanks for the 'heads up'.

It's OK, Reinder indeed! :-)

Edit

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Hi Junebug, you've got it right. Susan doesn't transform when she sings--we do. As I've posted elsewhere, I fell in love on the spot--her hair, her face, her cheeriness remind me of a beloved auntie whom I miss terribly. So it wasn't her appearance "at odds with" her talent that surprised me; it was hearing a sound I've never heard before. That crystal, passionate, powerful voice quite took my breath away--then came the goosebumps, the tears, the impact of those tragic lyrics, the need to hear her again and again. On that day in Glasgow, in a matter of seconds, an audience turned on a dime; since then, roughly 300 million individuals have dreamed and loved and cried as I have. It happened so fast, and that fascinates me. I think Susan is important because, among many other reasons, she has connected us to one another. (Could I actually have something in common with Dick Cheney?) Teenagers, who should be listening to Britney and boy bands, are screaming and cheering for a sweet, middle-aged lady who sings Broadway show tunes. She makes grown men cry. She swears like a sailor, she breaks your heart. Things we thought were inconsistent suddenly are not. Perhaps the world is not as lonely as we thought. We can all dream dreams. We can all hear the Pied Piper, and we are following. That's important.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Hi Junebug,

Obviously women's rights are of vital importance in your life which is admirable and a cause for which 'the time has come' to address the deplorable conditions under which women live in various parts of the world.

That being said, would you be posting this issue here had the singer been Paul Potts? - No, of course not.

Susan is a worldwide phenomenon due to her exceptional voice and the unusual story of her emergence into fame.

As John has mentioned, irrespective of the political and religious issues involved re women's rights, this fan site was set up for the sole purpose of being a friendly support group for Susan and where we can enjoy her marvelous talent.

We are not 'sticking our heads in the sand' - we are all well aware of the plight of women around the world. However, when I check into this fan site, I do so because I want to hear news specifically about Susan and to 'cheer her on'.

There is a marvelous site, 'Care2.com' where many critical subjects are discussed by the members; ie. women's rights, environment, conservation, global warming, etc. This is a great place to address 'women's rights'. Have been a member there for some years.

With all due respect,
Christine

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Is there something "unfriendly" about being logical and informative about Susan Boyle? Sure I would like warm and fuzzy concepts, including those I can agree with as it doesn't disturb my stereo typical thinking. So what statement is not political or theological in nature?
I would like to appease you as a unique person, but I don't know what is cherries and ice-cream to you? I don't know what is ugly or beauty to you?
Oh, I guess maybe you set the society's standard as to what is inflamatory or not? Love, and I can love you, I like good conversation as it relates to why Susan Boyle is important and I know it is different for many people. And no, I don't think many people are aware of women's rights around the world, and Susan Boyle is more than this issue, otherwise they would be more of a help than indifferent.
I'm not known to be the norm so maybe you are right, that this is not a place to discuss all the importances of Susan Boyle as it should be the place to discuss what you think makes you feel good.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Hi Junebug, just brushing the sand out of my hair as I write. This is certainly a women's issue. Maybe it's not rights so much as our burden to uphold the aesthetic double standard. There would be no need for this topic if it were Paul Potts. He wasn't relentlessly pilloried in the press and on the Internet, for months on end, over every physical characteristic deemed a flaw. Men simply are not subjected to the same scrutiny as women, and we need to call them, and ourselves, on it every time. No man would get a forum topic on whether he should have plastic surgery--and on what parts of his anatomy--with other men writing in to advise him on becoming visually acceptable. I feel like I'm coming from another planet. I grew up in the sixties. Our music was Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Mama Cass Elliot, Simon and Garfunkle, the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead...you get my drift? Granted, we didn't need them to be sex symbols because we had the Beatles, who were sexy enough for an entire generation. My point is that for both genders, appearance didn't matter. Just. Didn't. Matter. Not if they could sing. And from there to here, something has changed. The craziest part of all this is that Susan Boyle is ADORABLE. Anyone who can't see that should check into a clinic for a soul implant.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Skywriter, you said it better than I could. I think maybe that mass-media,: the cosmetic industry, clothing industry, cosmetic surgery industry, and hollywood, have pounded us so long with the "beauty" standard, that even Afican Americans have appologized for falling in the "put down Susan Boyle" trap. Whoopie Goldberg was someone who admits she fell in the trap. I admit that I did too as I thought she was a Minnie Pearl act, and shame on me. Really, thanks, you write so well.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Skywriter and Junebug. I agree with you,the double standard is alive and well unfortunately. Luckily most of the folks on this site agree with you on this, that Susan has earned her iconic standing in the music world. If she gets some new dresses and learns a little about make-up (which she has done) that's fine too. What inspires me though is how Susan rather innocently and sweetly invited the human race to look past appearances and see the person, her heart, her soul, and her unforgettable talent. It is so refreshing. I think that is what we celebrate here. The media upsets us all but she has enough support and love from us all over the planet that media cruelty only deepens the devotion of her fans. They won't change anytime soon I'm afraid. Have a great Sunday. Barb in Iowa

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Christine....
First off, with no dis-respect intended whatsoever to "Junebug", I would like to compliment you on your comments (reply), that was made in a very constructive and understanding manner.
I of course just happen to agree with the content of your reply completely.

I believe that the real significance of Susan Boyle though in the World's eye is that Susan represents all the millions of us all around the World that feel we too have something positive to contribute but also have never been given the opportunity.
Maybe because of appearance, maybe because of age or many times because of the social-economic level of our lives.

Susan Boyle has become that rallying point individual that we all have placed the hopes and dreams that we've all felt about ourselves at one time or another and we now feel that if Susan succeeds then we all finally succeed and by supporting her, we'll share in her personal Dream and her Victory over the
"pre-conceived judgemental opinions and prejudices" of others.

The Susan Boyle's of this World come along so rarely that we all feel, and we should feel, that it's extremely important that Susan now not be submissed and destoyed by the same people that have crushed so many other's dreams and hopes in the pass.
Susan is now the shinning Beacon of light that glows so brightly for ALL Of Us and we have become the force behind the determination that Susan will remain that Beacom of Light and continue to shine many years into the Future!

Bless Susan and give her the strength to achieve her lifelong Dream. She's certainly proven she's more then worthy and totally deserving.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Indeed Bob! Very indeed! Susan should be seen as liberator rather than victim. I am a great admirer of Vangelis, he will never win a global test of being the most beautiful man on this planet, yet I love him:

Photobucket 1973.

Photobucket More recent.

Not the ideal son in law, but his music is awesome. Many men on this planet only care wether a man or woman makes great music. I, like other normal thinking men do not bother wether Susan Boyle is a beauty, woman or not. Millions of men fell in love with Susan Boyle's achievements just like many women can fall for Brad Pitt. It has nothing to do with women's rights. Yeah sure, you have the trashbloids trying to hurt Susan, but you had them also in Michael Jackson's life and other male artists. Don't judge a book by its cover, male or female. That is the issue here and not rights.

Re: WHy is Susan Boyle Important?

Bob in Palm Springs, this is beautifully stated. Thank you for expressing what that amazing phenomenon of Susan Boyle has been in the hearts of everyone. She is a symbol of hope. And as you seemed to state, our love is helping to carry her though this stormy paparazzi maze.

Blessings to Susan and thanks to you as well.
