Even critics ill-disposed to the glutinous hype that has preceded Susan Boyle’s debut album, and its “oddball kitsch” (Bob Stanley, in this paper), concede that there is something special about her voice.
On Sunday night, Boyle’s rendition of Wild Horses on The X Factor should have silenced her detractors. It was stunning. Not what Mick Jagger or Keith Richards could have ever imagined for the song, but so what?
