Re: Susan Boyle bags triple Platinum record honour
Miss Susan has the sweetest most beautiful voice in the known universe...can't deny that. She made me hope again. Thankyou Miss Susan.
Re: Susan Boyle bags triple Platinum record honour
Ignore those silly people who use archaic words to describe a phenomenon. Nasty comments, of course, should be challenged, but Susan has risen so far above most of those writing about her that their use of language is irrelevant. Just think - 2 trips to LA, one to New York, X Factor at home, Paris, Germany, own show on TV, duet with one of UKs most admired singers - WOW WOW WHAT A FEW WEEKS FOR A LOVELY LADY.Add to that TOP of the charts for 3 weeks all over the world. Yes, I think we can accept that our Susan has made it. Many of us have worried, prayed and hoped that she would succeed and our prayers have been answered a thousandfold. Well done, Susan, and well done, fans. Between us we have beaten the sneering blighters.
Re: Susan Boyle bags triple Platinum record honour
The word "spinster" has negative connotations -- like it's a bad thing to never have been married -- but if it was a man, they'd call him a "bachelor." Perhaps the writer was using the term to contrast her life in Scotland to her rise in fame. Whatever, the media needs to latch onto something more positive and quit saying she's "dowdy," "mentally slow," etc. They would never describe a man in that way!
Re: Susan Boyle bags triple Platinum record honour
For the life of me, I can't figure out WHY they keep referring to her as 'mentally slow' - if she is considered as such, then I must be waaaay off the lower end of the scale!!
All the remarks I have ever heard Susan make during her interviews have been quick and clever! Combined with her great sense of humour, she is unique!
From the amazing show of affection and appreciation of world audiences and the amount of records she is breaking 'public opinion' feels the same way.

My first comment got reported as spam. I think there's a glitch in this John, even when I'm signed in. Anyway. "Slow" is a completely inappropriate and inaccurate. My knowledge of these mild disabilities have nothing in the world to do with intelligence! She may have dealt with classroom learning issues related more to thought processing than with actual intelligence.
My hubby has the same kind of thing as Susan. sometimes he shows genius, talking like a college professor. At other times he is really lacking in certain insight. But he's wonderful! He is author of a book about it. These wonderful folks may think and experience life differently. We could learn from them. They spend lots of time "out of the box" and I love it!

The glitch happened twice so far.
I hope it will fix by itself... I am watching.
For now, when I see members' posts in the box for review, I will free them ASAP.
Thank you very much for understanding. :)
Re: Susan Boyle bags triple Platinum record honour
"Slow" is very inappropriate and inaccurate. She is quite intelligent. I believe that her challenges from her oxygen deprivation may have given her some learning challenges and processing issues, but that's nothing to do with intelligence! My husband's disability is very much that way. He talks like a college professor for goodness sake. He has great wisdom about many things and completely lacks in others. But these guys are very bright indeed. Sad thing is, they may not be able to prove it with an IQ test. The ability to process knowledge the way the world would like to is not always present. But she like my guy, has some genius in her too. They live out of the box quite a bit and the world needs to accept who they are.
Dang. Think of some of the other genius performers out there who don't follow a certain mold. But the world adores them. Some of them go into comedy, like Jim Carey or Robin Williams, all well gifted with the goofball gene. so what? Susan can do comical and breathtaking all at once.

Re: Susan Boyle bags triple Platinum record honour
This article was nicely written except for the fact that the writer like so many others want to refer to Susan as "The spinster". I really get tired of that. Why don't they come up with a better term? For example: "The singing legend", "The Scottish Nightingale" "The lady with a golden voice", "The most beloved songstress on the planet" or if they wish to avois the flowery stuff, how about "the singer"?
I'm sure there are other descriptors we could all come up with that would be far preferable. To quote my daughter, "I'm just sayin.."

Exactly, Barb!
I, too, get fed up with these 'tired' and 'worn out' words! - And in a way, (maybe I'm too touchy!) it sounds like a 'put down' irrespective of how nice an article is! What is WRONG with these people? Frankly, I like all the suggestions you have given. Why is it so difficult for them to say something flattering?
How far up the fame ladder does Susan have to go before she can get rid of the stigma of being referred to as 'spinster' etc.

Re: Susan Boyle bags triple Platinum record honour
But ya know what? The higher she goes the harder the small minded try to knock her down. Maybe this article wasn't written in a mean spirited way but that term is so belittling. Now she's platinum so she will be a draw for the detractors still. I don't think they will be as tasteless as some of the others who stooped very low. But everyone of great success meets that kind of attitude out there.
I just want her to keep on believing and keep on doing her melodious thing. All of her dreams have been answered very quickly and she needs to keep feeling the motivation to set new goals and dreams and keep having a reason to still get up each day.
